A Message About SWE Policy on Observances

SWE has recently adopted a policy statement around holiday observances – whether religious, cultural, ethnic, or national.

As the holidays approach, it is important to periodically remind ourselves of the diversity within our organization. This diversity is what makes our Society unique. In order to continue to make all members feel included and valued, SWE has recently adopted a policy statement around observances – whether religious, cultural, ethnic, or national. The statement, created in conjunction with members of the multicultural subgroup within the Membership Committee, reminds all members that no one should purposely be excluded from any Society event nor penalized for missing any event due to a conflict.

“Supporting SWE’s core value of creating an inclusive environment for all our members and stakeholders, it is important for all SWE entities to respect the various religious, cultural, and national observances of our members throughout the world. As a US-based, secular, non-profit organization, the Society observes most federal US holidays and will avoid scheduling meetings, events, and business on these days. As an organization with members globally, all SWE entities should strive to avoid scheduling meetings, events, and business during any significant religious, cultural or national observances applicable to the core stakeholders within that entity. For conflicts that cannot be avoided, members must respect each other’s choice to not attend and there shall be no retribution/penalty.”

We hope members throughout the Society enjoy the upcoming holiday season, however they celebrate, and continue to support the diversity and inclusion on which we base the strength of our organization.
