This Holiday Season: STEM Toys for Girls

A few months ago, we discussed a new way to engage girls in STEM – toys. This month in Fortune magazine, Donna Fenn shared six new STEM toys that are being marketed just for girls this holiday season in her article, “Stem Toys Made For Girls Are The Hot New Trend.”

“It’s very important that these toys are being produced out in the market today,” said Colleen Layman, president of SWE. “Now that there are more options available for girls that simultaneously pique other interests, we find ourselves reaching a new demographic and opening up options for parents, educators and kids alike.”

As we think about how this is becoming a bigger trend, we realize we could be witnessing a small step in the giant leap to close the gender gap in STEM.

What are your thoughts? Do you think toys that foster girls’ STEM skills is a good way to grow women representation in these fields? If so, what is your favorite STEM toy for girls that is on the shelves today? Share your thoughts with us on Facebook and Twitter!
