Be a Candidate for Professional or Collegiate Senator

Are you a strategic thinker? Interested in helping develop policy for SWE or just get more involved? Be a candidate for professional or collegiate senator.

Senators are voting members of SWE’s senate. The senate charts the strategic direction of SWE by developing and adopting the long-range goals for the Society. The senate also develops statements of external policy on issues or positions that have broad implications for the professional environment and the Society as an organization. The senate is currently focused on improving SWE’s governance structure and this effort will continue through FY17.

Professional senators serve for 2 fiscal years and collegiate senators serve for one year. Each region and the international members have two professional senators with staggered terms. Thus, one professional senator for each group is elected annually. At the same time, each region elects a collegiate senator.

The international members also elect an alternate professional senator who serves for one year.

The senate typically meets during Annual Conference in the fall and also in late January or early February in the U.S. Funding for hotel and travel is available for two professional senators (from each region and the international members) and the collegiate senators to attend the January meeting. Additional meetings and training are virtual.

Questions? Reach out to any senator, Deputy Speaker Karen Roth or Senate Secretary Kate Hull or me. We’re happy to answer any questions.
