Comic book characters have seen a resurgence in American pop culture in the last few years. Marvel and DC Comics have been producing major movie franchises featuring a multitude of characters from their comic universes. Heroines have also seen their roles change, taking on the face of such characters as Thor and Iron Man in recent months.

Panelists include:

  • Ariel Johnson of Amalgam Comics & Coffeehouse in Philadelphia, a comic book retailer that caters to women and people of color
  • Annie Mok, comic book writer

In our special session Friday afternoon, we will ask our panelists:

  • How is society’s view of the female superhero changing?
  • How can heroines be used as a force for good in promoting young girls’ interest in science, technology, engineering and math?
