SWE K-12 Outreach News You Can Use for June 2017

Here is some news you can use as you plan your SWE K-12 Outreach program for the next fiscal year.

Published On: June 2017

Hello, Outreach Fans!

The summer is here … time to relax for a bit before starting back up with your K-12 Outreach programs. Here is some “news you can use” as you plan for success next fiscal year.

In this issue:

  1. Learn about the new Program Development Grant process for FY18
  2. Learn “Best Practices” from the Wow! Innovation Challenge Winners.
  3. Congratulations to the OMT raffle winners for April and May.
  4. Introducing the FY18 Outreach Committee Chair, and Congratulations to the Chair-Elect.

  1. Learn about the new Program Development Grant process for FY18.

The Program Development Grants (PDG) Committee is now accepting applications for FY18.   They are using a redesigned application and reporting tool for all PDG requests.

There is an application deadline at the end of each month.  To ensure you have enough time to submit your application, make sure your event occurs at least 45 days after the deadline you are applying for.  For example, if you apply for the July 1 deadline, your event must take place after August 15.

Requests under $1,000 will be reviewed every month.  Requests of $1000 or more will only be reviewed every other month starting in July (i.e. July, September, November, etc.).  So plan ahead!

To learn more and get to the application links, read this All Together blog post.

  1. Learn “Best Practices” from the Wow! Innovation Challenge Winners.

Congratulations to the winner of Wow! Innovation Challenge #4, the University of Wisconsin – Madison, for their effective approaches to expanding the reach of their STEM Outreach events.

For winning this challenge, the section will receive a $500 Outreach stipend.

This completes the second year of the Wow! challenge.  To learn “best practices” from past winners, click on this link.

  1. Congratulations to the OMT raffle winners for April and May.

Starting in February, we’ve had a random drawing each month among all Outreach Metric Tool (OMT) entries for that month.  The monthly winning section receives a $100 Amazon gift card for their future Outreach activities.

Congratulations to these winners and thanks for submitting your K-12 Outreach events:

April’s winner: Section H054, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (entry submitted by Abigail Gerth

May’s winner: Section A007, Sierra Nevada (entry submitted by Seena Drapala)

There is still a chance to win in June!  Enter any K-12 Outreach event or activity that any member of your section has participated in during the last six months at www.surveymonkey.com/s/omtool.  It’s easy!   It takes less than 5 minutes.  June’s winner will be selected from all entries submitted between June 1 and June 30.

FYI, we’ve met our Outreach Metric Tool goal for the year.  As of today, we are at 1089 entries, vs. our goal of 1065.  Thank you!!!

  1. Introducing the FY18 Outreach Committee Chair, and Congratulations to the Chair-Elect.

I’d like to introduce Kate Nolan, the FY18 Outreach Committee Chair.  Kate is a Chemical Engineer who graduated from the University of Missouri – Columbia.  She works as a Materials and Process Engineer for Boeing in the St. Louis area.

Kate has been a member of the Outreach Committee since FY14, most recently as the Wow! Innovation Challenge Work Group lead, and previously as the Programs Work Group lead.  She has been involved in other SWE Outreach efforts such as Invent It. Build It. and FIRST championships.  She also served as the Outreach Awards Coordinator for several years.

Welcome, Kate!

I’d like to announce and congratulate the new Outreach Committee Chair-Elect, Dr. Susan Mengel.   Susan has a PhD in Computer Science from Texas A&M University.  She works as an Associate Professor at Texas Tech University.

Susan has been a member of the Outreach Committee since September 2014.  She was co-lead and then lead of the Assessment Work Group, where she has provided insights to other work groups by analyzing our quantitative information from the Outreach Metric Tool and the SWENext program.  Susan has also been involved with Invent It. Build It. for several years.

Congratulations, Susan!

To reach the Outreach Committee Chair, send an email to outreach-chair@swe.org.

My term as Outreach Committee Chair is coming to an end this month.  It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as Chair.  I’ve seen first hand the passion that SWE members have for K-12 Outreach.  I’ve seen their commitment to “pay it forward” by encouraging girls to consider engineering, just like someone had done for them in the past.

SWE’s “Superpower” is YOU, our members.  And we’ve used that Superpower at over 1080 events that impacted over 58,000 girls this year.  Thank you!

Since STEM Outreach is my passion, I plan to stay on the Outreach Committee, working to complete the Parents & Educators Program Tool Kit and take on other work, as needed.

So this isn’t goodbye … it’s just “till we meet again.”

Best regards,

Mary 🙂
