This year’s theme for WE17 is Always Connecting…Always Engineering. You cannot attend a WE conference without forming connections, and we know that engineering is more than just a profession…it’s a mindset and outlook that defines who you are and how you think.

So, in anticipation of the largest conference for women engineers, we’re asking our members how they’re Always Connecting and Always Engineering in their lives.

Everything in my daily life is surrounded by some form of engineering marvel and engineering has become so ingrained in my DNA that I look around and come up with ideas to improve or optimize objects. I work at Intel in the data center group and am continuously learning & implementing new server processor applications. When I use Google, Facebook, Twitter etc., the thought of how all the data must be at that very moment getting processed in some server farm somewhere as well as how cloud solutions and privacy must be happening.

Swe Member Beenish Zia Is Always Connecting … Always EngineeringOutside work, when I am practicing Karate and Saber Fencing (two of my favorite sports that I train in regularly), I keep thinking of the physics behind our body mechanics and how I can build different electrical gadgets to improve my performance in the sport.

When I talk to folks outside engineering and they share an issue with me, most of the time I come up with a few different engineering solutions to solve the issue. The engineering way of thinking, which I believe is efficient and quick, has changed my lifestyle a lot, mostly for the better. It’s a profession I am proud of and it gives me a bigger appreciation and understanding of the technology around me.

Swe Member Beenish Zia Is Always Connecting … Always EngineeringI was teaching a class of young girls and I asked them to write their favorite activity. Surprisingly there was not a single activity which was not touched by an engineer in some way. Whether it was swimming, tennis, knitting or whatever. They found it inspirational and eye opening. So, I believe I am always engineering anything I do. Crafting new ways to optimize an already existing solution or coming up with novel new ideas.

Engineering is not just a profession, it’s a way of my life…
