It’s been an exciting month for fundraising. On September 21, HBO’s Last Week Tonight, in a story examining claims made by the Miss America Organization to be the world’s largest provider of scholarships for women, mentioned SWE as an organization successfully dedicated to supporting women in academia through scholarships. Noting that SWE has already awarded more than $700,000 in financial aid this year, host John Oliver implored viewers to support organizations that make real, positive contributions to women in academia. Due to that brief mention, SWE has seen an incredible upswell in the number of donations made to our scholarship program.
SWE was already on track to have a great year for fundraising before the episode aired, but the signal boost that occurred in its wake has taken our fundraising efforts to an incredible new level. While we’re still tallying the final numbers, SWE has already seen a remarkable outpouring of support: there have been 5,000 unique hits on our donation page and we have received $44,000 in donations.
In 2014, SWE has disbursed more than 230 new and renewed scholarships valued at more than $721,000. Over the past six years, SWE has awarded more than $3 million to more than 1,000 women who are pursuing careers in engineering. Please help us continue to fund these amazing young women as they pursue their academic dreams-visit swe.org/scholarships and swe.org/donate for more information or to donate.
