How does the Leadership Competency Model Assessment Work?

Using the Leadership Competency Model (LCM) assessment tool, you can self-evaluate your skill level within the competencies and then identify areas for improvement. As a result, you benefit from further career and professional development. Table 1 shows the name of the assessment, and the topic for each section within the assessment. If you would like to learn more about what the LCM is, click here.

Leadership Competency Model

A rating scale was devised using five proficiency levels (Novice to Expert) and a point range was assigned to each proficiency level. This is shown in Table 2.

Leadership Competency Model

To illustrate how the LCM is used, if a member completed the communication section of the assessment and scored 33, they would be rated as Competent in that skill area. Included below are sample knowledge, skills, and abilities that you can self-assess using the proficiency scale from 1-5 where 1 is a novice and 5 is Expert:

  • Communicate plans and activities in a manner that supports strategies for teamwork.
  • Conflict resolution and management by skillfully settling differences in a positive and constructive manner.
  • Leverages diversity and differences by leading and supporting an inclusive environment.
  • Seeks new perspectives to achieve the vision and mission of SWE.
  • Influencing others through coalition building, inviting new perspectives, and clearly articulating the goals of SWE.
  • Identify and collaborate with internal and external partners.

Leadership Development to Continue To Increase Your Proficiency in the Needed Areas

If you are like me, having a plan of action helps me successfully complete projects. As a result, SWE has also created a leadership development plan and mission statement template for you to use. These help you identify your top three categories for additional leadership development such as establishing the objectives, steps of action, and potential resources to assist you. Don’t forget that there are a variety of opportunities available to you in SWE’s Advance Learning Center. I personally recommend the new Leadership Fundamentals Series which includes five narrated eLearning modules which each take approximately 15 – 20 minutes to complete. Learn more about the series by viewing the Leadership Fundamental Series – Content Outline.

Next Steps

SWE has provided the opportunity for leadership development using our Leadership Competency Model (LCM) developed with the intention of guiding our professional development of future and current leaders. Refer to SWE’s Advance Learning Center for a variety of opportunities including various Webinars, eLearning, professional coaching services, or listening to SWE’s podcast Diverse, now also available in iTunes and Sound cloud.
