This year’s theme for WE17 is Always Connecting … Always Engineering. You cannot attend a WE conference without forming connections, and we know that engineering is more than just a profession…it’s a mindset and outlook that defines who you are and how you think.

So, in anticipation of the largest conference for women engineers, we’re asking our members how they’re Always Connecting and Always Engineering in their lives.

Always engineering
Amy Jo Moore
Northrop Grumman, Mechanical Engineer

I feel like I can’t turn engineering off in my life. I recently had a baby, who attended WE16 with me, and every toy, piece of furniture, or piece of baby gear gets my mind rolling. How best to put her crib together? What books I want her to hear and read. How does her swing work? Why does the ocean sounds put her to sleep faster than rain sounds? Everything I do with her makes me think about how something was made or what I can do to make my job as mommy more efficient.

Having her also helped me in my job at Northrop Grumman and in my board of directors position at SWE. I want to be home with her, so I really started looking at the processes and tasks I was doing at work. I wanted to become more organized and efficient so I can get out on time.

My husband would also say I’m always engineering because I can’t watch a show or movie without picking it apart. One night watching “The Flash,” I answered the problem they were trying to solve before they did in the show. The hubby wasn’t as amused as I was. 🙂
