As the FY19 SWE leadership teams prepare for this upcoming year, we continue to take moments to thank the most recent past Board of Directors for their tremendous leadership, volunteer service, and generosity to the organization through their personal stewardship.
In addition to providing the invaluable service of volunteer leadership to SWE, all SWE Board of Directors and Leaders are encouraged to contribute to SWE each year. These donations are both a vote of confidence in SWE’s capacity to fulfill its mission and provide vital support for the organization.
SWE could not function without the tremendous leadership and generosity of the Board of Directors and we are pleased to feature a few of their personal reasons for giving back to SWE through this short blog series!

SWE: How and why do you donate to SWE?
Doty: I have gained so much personally and professionally from my experience with SWE in terms of relationships, mentoring, leadership opportunities, and development that it is only natural to want to pay it forward. As a life member, I don’t pay dues each year, but I still choose to make a financial contribution to support our mission. I appreciate that my employer not only offers a matching gift program, but also will donate to non-profits based on hours volunteered by the employees, so I’m able to maximize my impact to SWE.
SWE: In looking at this past year, can you share one or two of your favorite ways you have seen SWE strive to fulfill its mission?
Doty: I was excited to see the full roll-out of the WE Local conference model. I attended in Tulsa and in Portland, and I found inspiration in the wide range of keynote speakers, development in the many sessions, and the opportunity to inspire the future through the SWENext Design Labs.
SWE: What words of encouragement do you have for the FY19 BOD & Leaders around giving back to SWE?
Doty:Demonstrated financial commitment of the volunteer leaders, at whatever level they can be proud to contribute, is one of the best ways to instill confidence in other potential donors to enable us to further our mission. The combination of your time, talent, and treasure is much appreciated!

Heather has over 15 years’ experience as structural engineer in the aerospace industry with specialties in finite element analysis, opto-mechanical design and analysis, optical bonding, cryogenic systems. She also boasts over 20 years of community service to a variety of technical, educational, leadership, and arts organizations with specific skills in finance and strategic planning. Heather Doty has served in a variety of capacities at SWE at both the local and national level, including most recently on the FY18 Board of Directors.
