The SWENext Community Awards program recognizes girls in grades 6-12 who are actively interested in STEM and doing something in their community about it (e.g. raising awareness, mentoring students, participating in SWENext, etc.). Community Award recipients will attend a SWENext DesignLab outreach event in one of three cities and receive a certificate during the awards ceremony.
About SWENext DesignLab
SWENext DesignLab is an outreach event taking place at three WE Local conferences in 2019 - Baltimore, St. Louis and Denver. At DesignLab, students, parents and educators will learn more about fostering a diverse engineering workforce and how we can inspire young generations to pursue their interests in STEM.
The morning will feature educational sessions for students, parents and educators including SWENext 101, bias literacy training and role models matter training. The afternoon will feature presentations from teams competing in the DesignLab Community Engagement Challenge. An award ceremony will follow for the Community Engagement Challenge, the Community Award recognition and the Community Innovator Award winners.
Community Innovator Awards
Three juniors and seniors from the Community Awards applications will be deemed a Community Innovator. To be considered, students must submit a three-minute video discussing their involvement with STEM and what they are doing in their community. Community Innovators will receive a SWENext trophy and a mentoring session with a SWE Professional.
