In August and September of 2019, SWE Affiliate Mody University of Science and Technology (MUST)—a private women’s university in Rajasthan, India—hosted events to engage new and existing students in the world of STEM and SWE.

News Roulette & Twisted Tales

Mody University event posterThe Society of Women Engineers‘ MUST Affiliate organised its first in-house session for the 2019-2020 season on 2nd August, 2019. It was a fun, interactive session wherein the members of the society played an interesting game called News Roulette. Just like the famous ‘game’ of Russian Roulette, this game too was all about chance. In the game, the students passed around a cushion to the sound of music and whenever the music stopped, the student holding the pillow had to come up on the stage and present a piece of news that they thought was interesting and relevant to everyone. This went on until all the students had presented their piece of news. This activity helped everyone stay in touch with all that is happening around the world and gave each and every one a platform to express their opinions and views. The fresh new faces of the students of the first year were also among the keen participants of this activity. It gave them a platform to get to know their seniors and peers at a personal level and helped them face their fears of speaking in front of a group. All in all, this event achieved all that it had aimed to and rightly marked the beginning of great journey for SWE.

Book Club Session

Mody University event posterOn 6th September, 2019, the SWE MUST Affiliate in collaboration with Penumbra and Xperia, conducted a Book club session at Mody University, Laxmangarh, Rajasthan. The event was organised under the supervision and guidance of Dr. Vinod Maan, Faculty Coordinator for SWE’s MUST Section and was moderated by Ms. Ananya Singh, Ms. Sneha Dujaniya and Ms. Sanjoi Dubey. One of the SWE members of Mody University, Ms. Radhika Gupta—who has a page on Instagram dedicated to book reviews and all things related to literature—encouraged the members to inculcate the habit of reading. She announced a giveaway of two books to two lucky winners by the end of the event.

The session kick started with a Ted talk by Elizabeth Gilbert. As soon as it was over, each member came up and talked about the book of their choice. Among the books that were reviewed, we had titles such as ‘A Thousand Splendid Suns’, ‘Immortals of Meluha’, ‘The Da Vinci Code’, ‘The Alchemist’, ‘Norwegian Wood’, ‘The Secret’ and many others. The plethora of genres and the vivid views people had on each of the books they had read, simply made the session more interesting. Apart from this discussion on books, people even talked about what good writing is, their journey as a reader and why reading is vital to us.

The two winners had really amazing views on the title they talked about. Vandita Vyas explained how ‘Norwegian Wood’ has impacted her life on a personal level and Raj Lakshmi pin-pointed every minute detail from ‘The Da Vinci Code’ without giving away too much detail. The event concluded with an insightful talk given by Dr. Vinod Maan on the book ‘The 5 a.m. club’ by Robin Sharma and tip-sharing on developing the habit of reading.

All in all, the event acted as food for thought for everyone present in the room. It also encouraged people and introduced them to the notion of effective reading as well.
