The 2020 WE Local conferences in San Diego, Salt Lake City, Raleigh, Buffalo and Des Moines are happening sooner than you think! WE Local presents exciting opportunities; however, some SWE members may need extra assistance to attend. SWE provides opportunities for members to save money on WE Local.
One way in which SWE members can save is through their employers. Employers are a great resource who can potentially support members through registration fees for conferences, travel costs for conferences, company time for travel or sponsorship of conferences. Before you talk to your employer about SWE:
- Develop your SWE resume
- Gather your SWE support materials, and
- Tell them “why” the WE Local program will help you as their employee
Download SWE’s Employer Support documents for WE Local to help you in preparing to approach your employer for assistance.
WE Local Travel Grants
If employer support is not an option, SWE members interested in receiving financial assistance are encouraged to apply for a WE Local travel grant. Completing a survey gives you the chance to be awarded funding. In the survey, all applicants must write a statement of no more than 500 words describing their passion for engineering and key takeaways that they are hoping to gain from the conference for personal growth and to share with their local area.
Applicants who are awarded a travel grant will receive discounted registration and a WE Local Awards Banquet ticket. Don’t delay in applying for a grant—the application deadline is Friday, November 1. Anyone interested in applying for a travel grant can click here.
SWE Volunteer Roles
A few other ways to save for WE Local are volunteer opportunities and leadership roles. WE Local has more than 130 volunteer opportunities that can offer 20 percent discounts to participants. Visit the WE Local host city website of your choice and under the “Schedule” tab select “Volunteer at WE Local” to learn more about volunteer roles and to sign up. Be sure to explore SWE leadership roles which often provide funding to attend conferences.
Shared Travel Costs
Additionally, many SWE members coordinate hotel sharing programs and carpools to reduce travel costs. The SWE Member Closed Facebook Group is a great forum to start these conversations.
Between travel grants, employer support and more, there are many great ways to save on WE Local. It’s not too early to start planning travel to WE Local San Diego Jan. 31-Feb. 1, WE Local Salt Lake City Feb. 7-8, and WE Local Raleigh Feb. 21-22!
