The Big Idea

For National STEM Day (November 8), we want to celebrate the incredible achievements of women and girls in STEM by highlighting creations that have been made by women—no matter where they are in their STEM journeys. This activation will be a rallying cry for women and girls to say, “I made this.” From accomplished STEM role models, to talent and digital creators, to girls who may just be starting to explore STEM, we want to see what YOU have made using science, technology, engineering and math!

What it Looks Like

On National STEM Day, we want to flood social media with the incredible creations of women in STEM. We’ll do this by releasing a series of videos featuring women and girls showing off their STEM creations, proudly declaring “I made this.” We want women and girls across the country to participate, by posting their own STEM creations, using the hashtags #SheCanSTEM and #IMadeThis, for a chance to be featured in an “anthem”-style video (which will launch in late November before Thanksgiving). At launch, we’d like for you to amplify the anthem video on your own channels & will follow up the week of 11/18 with specific guidance for amplification, along with sample social copy.

How You Can Participate Starting on November 8

Encourage women in your networks to share their own content for a chance to be featured in the “I Made This” video

• Amplify the “I Made This” message by encouraging women and girls within your network to post photos and videos showcasing themselves with their STEM creations on National STEM Day (November 8).
  • Participants should explain the object/creation’s connection to STEM in post copy. Posts should include #SheCanSTEM and #IMadeThis and tag @SheCanSTEM.
  • Participants will have the chance to be featured in the “I Made This” anthem video, which will launch later in November.

Use our GIPHY stickers on Instagram

• We’ve created fun She Can STEM stickers for people to use in their Instagram Story posts that feature something they’ve made using STEM. You can find the “I Made This” stickers on our GIPHY channel or by simply searching “She Can STEM” in Instagram Stories. Drop a sticker or two into your own Instagram Stories and encourage your network to do the same!
  • Please tag @SheCanSTEM in your Instagram Story so we can consider re-sharing on @SheCanSTEM.
• How to access stickers using Instagram Stories:
  • Open the Instagram app and take a photo/video using Instagram Stories.
  • In the top right corner, click – the sticker icon that looks like a page with its corner turned up.
  • Next, click on the gif icon .
  • In the search bar, search “She Can STEM” and pick which sticker you’d like to use!

• In celebration of National STEM Day, She Can STEM will have a national, custom Snapchat filter available for use on 11/8. Take a photo or video on Snapchat and swipe until you find our filter! Encourage your networks to use the filter, too.

Campaign Talking Points

• The Issue: Young girls like STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) subjects. But research shows that when they get to middle school, they start to feel that STEM is “not for them” because they don’t see role models who look like them or the different ways they can bring the subjects to life.
• The Opportunity: If we want women to be the next generation of STEM leaders, girls need to see that it is possible. If they can see it, they can – and will – be it.
• The Campaign: She Can STEM aims to get girls involved in science, technology, engineering and math and show them just how creative, unexpected, cool and inspiring STEM can be. The campaign showcases real women who have accomplished great things in the STEM fields. Their achievements are a rallying cry for the future generation of girls in STEM.
• The Call-to-Action: Follow @SheCanSTEM on Instagram to find inspiring stories of women who have done incredible things in STEM fields and resources for getting involved in and staying in science, technology, engineering and math.
  

Language Guidelines

• DO:
  • DO keep language straightforward and conversational. Avoid overly formal or technical language.
  • DO emphasize the unique and unexpected ways you interact with STEM.
  • DO share any personal stories you have with pursuing your STEM passions – is there a role model you looked up to?
• DO NOT:
  • DO NOT compare girls’ abilities in STEM to boys’.
  • DO NOT portray math and science as difficult subjects and obstacles.
  • DO NOT use personal watermarks, signatures, or overlays
  • DO NOT feature any alcohol or alcohol consumption
