The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) has evolved since its founding in 1950. So, too, have pageants. We want to be at the forefront of showing all that women have to offer, so when SWE Member Michelle Lin reached out to us about sponsoring her in a pageant, we were all ears.

It’s crucial that we remember that engineers are more than “just” engineers; they are unique individuals with their own interests, hobbies and passions. There are so many smart, talented women out there who are using pageants as a platform to share important messages and raise awareness for causes they believe in, and Michelle Lin is one of them.

You see, while Michelle is undoubtedly a talented aerospace engineer, she is so much more than that. She is a first-generation immigrant from Taiwan who first learned English at the age of nine. She is one proud woman out of 30 sitting in an engineering lecture hall with 200 men. She is an empowered individual who stands up for injustices in our society. She is passionate about emphasizing diversity in the industry, and furthermore, making the aerospace world more accessible to those who don’t see themselves represented in it.

And that is something SWE not only stands behind, but is proud to support. Therefore, we will be sponsoring Michelle in the 2019 Miss Colorado USA pageant—and you can bet we’ll be cheering her on as she soars across that stage and shares her message and passion about equality in the engineering world with an audience of thousands.

SWE will continue to fight against stereotypes and support the women who are out there breaking barriers. Best of luck to you, Michelle Lin!
