WE Local Des Moines Host Committee Chair Helen Colvin outlines some great reasons for attending a WE Local conference.

Dear fellow Society of Women Engineers (SWE) members and women engineers and technologists,

Let me keep this simple, WE Local conferences are the place to be if:

  • You went to WE19 and couldn’t get enough of the career fair, keynote speakers, networking opportunities, awards and recognitions, and professional development sessions! I can’t wait for WE20 in New Orleans to do it all over again but in the meantime, fill the need with WE Local Des Moines!
  • You couldn’t make it to WE19 because of dates or budget constraints. Luckily, WE Local North America offers five dates and host cities to choose from. Maybe there is a WE Local near you or near a corporate office, friends, or family, that could ease that travel costs. When choosing which WE Local to attend, you don’t have to pick the closest one! Plus, there are Europe and India conferences as well. WE Locals are great shorter version of the Society’s Annual conference.
  • You want to volunteer! There are several opportunities to support WE Local Des Moines. Support Collegiate Competition finalists by helping judge posters and lightning talks, or just help make the conference happen by volunteering on-site a Speaker Logistics or Registration volunteer. Des Moines is also one of three host cities offering SWENext DesignLab!
  • You want to build your SWE network before attending a SWE event or annual conference because the idea of being among 15,000+ attendees seems overwhelming. The WE Local conferences offer a much more intimate setting to be able to meet and socialize with fellow SWE members and potential new members.

I hope to see you in Des Moines!

A note from Afton Coleman, WE Local Des Moines Marketing Liason:

As your Marketing Liaison for WE Local Des Moines, I am also looking forward to attending the SWE, WE Local Des Moines conference on Friday, April 17- Saturday, April 18, 2020. Educational workshops and engaging sessions provide professional development designed specifically for women in engineering and technology. The online agenda and mobile app will be ready the week of December 16th so check back then to see the complete line-up.

Attendees can also meet with potential employers and connect with colleagues while honing their professional skills. WE Local allows you to “Meet Locally. Learn Socially.” so, you can reach your fullest potential as an engineer.

I am choosing to attend WE Local because I am excited to meet and learn from fellow professionals and I hope you will join me! Registration is now open—learn more and register here!

If you are looking for additional ways to be engaged (while receiving a discount!) please consider volunteering!  By volunteering for two hours, you can receive a 20% discount on a Premier Registration. This registration provides you with full conference access that includes meals, breakout sessions, two keynote speaker presentations, career fair and the WE Local Celebration – a Friday night social networking event.
