Abby WatsonAbout Abby Watson:

Abby Watson is SWE’s Collegiate Coordinator and part of the Membership & Data Management team. Prior to joining SWE in March 2020 Abby worked at a software development company, though her background is largely in the mental health field. Her position at SWE combines the administrative and data skills she learned from working in software with her passion for social justice. She enjoys crafting, cooking, and reading books with the word ‘girl’ in the title.


Who is your role model and why?

My role models are Black activists and educators Sonya Renee Taylor and Rachel Cargle. I have learned a lot from them and am continuing to learn about how to be anti-racist and how to make sure that my feminism is intersectional.

Where are you from/where were you raised?

I am from Miami, FL but have lived in Chicago for ten years now.

If you could eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Potato chips. Specifically, the folded ones that are extra crunchy.

What is the best piece of professional advice you’ve received?

Don’t be afraid to ask questions.

What is your favorite place in the world?

I can’t imagine anything better than laying in a hammock on a beautiful breezy day.

What movie or TV quote are you most likely to use in conversation?

“You’re a sicko!” or “Mention it all!” – Bethenny Frankel, Real Housewives of NYC

What was the inspiration that made you get into your field?

I got into the nonprofit field so I could help people and make a positive impact on others.

What is your favorite thing about your job?

My favorite thing about my job is that everything I do contributes to the mission of empowering women in their STEM careers.
