In light of recent events, SWE is issuing a statement condemning both the recent acts of violence and an overall increase in hate-crimes against the Asian American and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) communities across the United States.

The Society of Women Engineers stands against all forms of violence, racism, and discrimination. In May of 2020, we issued a statement condemning the murder of George Floyd and the systemic racism that many people of color face in our communities. Sadly, once again, we need to issue a statement condemning both the recent acts of violence and an overall increase in hate-crimes against the Asian American and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) communities across the United States. We are deeply troubled by these acts of racism and stand in solidarity with these communities in seeking justice and equity.

SWE’s mission is to empower women to achieve full potential in careers as engineers and leaders, expand the image of the engineering and technology professions as a positive force in improving the quality of life, and demonstrate the value of diversity and inclusion. We are committed to pursuing diversity, equity, and inclusion for all of our members, many of whom are from Asian American and Pacific Islanders communities.

To continue to foster DE&I sensibility among our staff and leaders, we have worked to develop a comprehensive DE&I awareness and professional development series that all staff and leaders are required to complete. In addition, we are offering this resource free of charge to our membership of over 40K individuals worldwide.

In times like this we are reminded of the Edmund Burke quote, made famous by John F. Kennedy, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil, is for good men to do nothing.” Let us all stand as good citizens by showing our support for the Asian American and Pacific Islanders in our SWE community and the global community. We are with you!
