Henry Luce Foundation Awards 3-Year Grant to Support the Academic Leadership for Women in Engineering Program

The Henry Luce Foundation recently awarded SWE a $200,000 grant over three years to support the Academic Leadership for Women in Engineering (ALWE) program. The overarching purpose of ALWE is to provide female academics in engineering with tangible skills and knowledge needed to pursue, acquire and gainfully maintain institutional leadership positions at a university.

The intended audience for the ALWE program are women in the early and mid-stages of their careers at academic institutions. Participants in the ALWE program experience year-round workshops with interactive sessions that provide best practices to advance in academia while creating opportunities to network across institutions.

Since 2014, over 300 women have participated in ALWE. The upcoming program will host 45 members and will feature live expert speaker sessions from September through April, professional group coaching and peer coaching, and an exclusive ALWE networking event at WE22.

“Since 2003, the Luce Foundation has been proud to support SWE through grants for graduate fellowships, research projects, and symposiums. ALWE is yet another of SWE’s outstanding programs for women in STEM, introducing academic leadership and administration as potential career paths to women engineers and offering them essential professional development, mentorship, and networking opportunities that are not typically part of graduate engineering education. We are delighted to renew our support for such an exemplary program,” said Sarah DeMartazzi, Program Manager for the Luce Foundation’s Clare Boothe Luce Program for Women in STEM.

“We are excited that the Henry Luce Foundation has continued their support for the ALWE program,” said Karen Horting, Executive Director & CEO for the Society of Women Engineers. “ALWE addresses the growing need to increase the participation and contribution of women in positions of academic leadership in engineering departments and to foster the professional growth of women within academia. With the foundation’s renewed commitment, SWE will introduce new and exciting coaching opportunities to increase participant engagement facilitating deeper connections among cohort members.”
