Hoy queremos poner nuestro enfoque en presentarte a Yara Ramirez-Carrillo (she/her/ella). Yara es Ingeniero Químico, CSP, y podcaster.
Actualmente trabaja como consultora para una compañía de soluciones de seguridad multinacional, DEKRA North America. También ofrece consultas independientes y servicios de traducciones técnicas para compañías de manufactura y construcción en Ingles y Español.
Con más de 10 años de experiencia en plantas de manufactura, como farmacéuticas, procesadoras de comida, industria de construcción y materiales, Yara es apasionada sobre la seguridad industrial y la prevención de incidentes.
Como Podcaster, Yara ha sido pionera y comenzó el primer podcast the segura industrial en Español en EEUU en Octubre de 2021, “Seguridad en Mente”, con el principal propósito de servir y educar a los trabajadores y la comunidad hispano parlante sobre la mentalidad de seguridad y los peligros que encontramos a diario en el trabajo y en el hogar.
Nos sentamos a conversar con Yara y le preguntamos:
¿Por qué te interesaste en estudiar una carrera en STEM?
Mi papá. Mi papi, (QEPD), era un profesional increíble. Era Ingeniero agrónomo y crecí expuesta a ese modo de pensar para solucionar problemas. Para mí los ingenieros eran lo más cercano a un superhéroe; porque de niña me parecía que los ingenieros lo sabían solucionar todo. Claro que en la realidad somos mortales; pero la aproximación racional que tiene la ingeniería se quedó conmigo hasta este día. En secundaria también tuve un muy buen maestro de ciencias, que nos desafiaba a aprender química, física y biología. Hacía experimentos y demostraciones tangibles que explicaban el comportamiento de la materia. Esto respondió muchas preguntas que yo tenía y despertó en gran manera mi curiosidad por estudiar a profundidad el mundo que nos rodea, su composición molecular y su comportamiento.
¿Qué te inspiró a crear el Podcast Seguridad en Mente?
La necesidad. La necesidad es la madre del ingenio. Muchas veces, dando entrenamientos quería darle a los empleados un recurso en Español, que fuera sencillo, al alcance de cualquier persona, desde cualquier lugar del país o desde otro país, que fuera gratis y que les dijera cómo protegerse de otros peligros no abordados durante el entrenamiento. No encontré nada y no iba a estar de brazos cruzados esperando que a alguien se le ocurriera algún día hacer un podcast sobre seguridad ocupacional en Español; podría nunca pasar. Pensé entonces en ser pionera en el asunto y con la ayuda de otra colega, emprendí en Octubre del 2021 SEGURIDAD EN MENTE.
¿Por qué crees que es importante ver a más Latinas en Ingeniería y STEM?
Porque somos capaces; porque las inmigrantes latinas y las latinas que son segunda, tercera, cuarta generación en US somos tan capaces de lograr una carrera en Ingeniería o en STEM como cualquier otra persona. Es todo un desafío cuando ya tenés familia, hijos, esposo y debemos balancear la vida profesional con las responsabilidades del hogar; sin embargo, la preparación académica nos da la oportunidad de buscar oportunidades laborales flexibles que acomoden nuestras responsabilidades en el hogar, que en mi caso son mi prioridad en la vida.
Las mujeres con formación académica en STEM también tienen un mejor entendimiento de los fenómenos naturales y de la materia. En mi caso, esto me ha servido para ayudar a mi hijo en sus tareas, y para tomar decisiones en función del bienestar de mi familia.

Today we would like to introduce you to Yara Ramirez-Carrillo.
Yara currently serves as an EHS Principal Consultant for a multinational safety solutions company, DEKRA North America. She also provides independent consulting and technical translation services for manufacturing and construction companies in English and Spanish.
With 10+ years of experience in manufacturing plants such as pharmaceutical, food processing, construction materials and the construction industry, Yara is passionate about industrial safety and the prevention of incidents.
As a Podcaster, Yara was a pioneer and started the first Industrial safety podcast in Spanish in the USA in October 2021, “Seguridad en mente” (safety in mind), with the sole purpose of serving and educating the Spanish speaking workforce and community in the safety mind-set and the hazards we encounter daily at work and at home.
We asked Yara to share more about her story.
What inspired you to choose Engineering?
My Dad. My Daddy (RIP), who was an incredible professional. He was an agricultural engineer and I grew up being exposed to that way of thinking to solve problems. To me, engineers were the closest things to superheroes, because as a child I thought engineers could solve everything. Of course, in reality, we are just mortals, but the rational approach engineering provides has stayed with me until this day. When I was in high school, I had a great science teacher, who challenged us to learn chemistry, physics, and biology. He made experiments and tangible demonstrations that explained the behavior of matter. This answered so many of my questions and awoke my curiosity to study in more detail the world that surrounds us, its molecular composition, and its behavior.
What inspired you to create a fully Spanish Podcast “Seguridad en Mente”?
Necessity. Necessity is the mother of ingenuity. Many times, giving trainings, I wanted to give employees a resource in Spanish that was simple, available to anyone, from anywhere in the country or from another country, that was free and that told them how to protect themselves from other dangers not addressed during the training. I didn’t find anything and I wasn’t going to sit idly by waiting for someone to one day make a podcast about occupational safety in Spanish; could never happen. That’s when I decided to become a pioneer in this regard and with the help of a colleague I started Seguridad en Mente in October of 2021.
Why do you think it is important to see more Latinas in Engineering and STEM?
Because we are capable; because Latina immigrants and Latinas who are second, third, fourth generation in the US are just as capable of achieving a career in Engineering or STEM as anyone else. It is quite a challenge when you already have a family, children, a husband and we must balance professional life with home responsibilities; however, academic preparation gives us the opportunity to seek flexible work opportunities that accommodate our responsibilities at home, which in my case are my priority in life.
Women with an academic background in STEM also have a better understanding of natural phenomena and matter. In my case, this has helped me to help my son with his homework, and to make decisions based on the well-being of my family.
