The Academic Leadership for Women in Engineering (ALWE) program is such a great program for academics from all rankings and at all stages of their careers. This year has been extra special because the program included many global members who are now involved in the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) and plan to volunteer for several committees.

As part of SWE’s Women In Academia (WIA) Committee, we recognize the importance of attending these sessions, and we strongly encourage our lead members to attend it every year. The staff and the speakers are exceptional, and the entire program is beyond our expectations. It is reassuring to know that the program evolves and has a different approach every year so you feel compelled to be part of it again.

Hear Dr. Lamas share more about her ALWE experience and her career as a woman engineer in academia on episode 271 of Diverse: a SWE podcast!

This year, we had amazing sessions with a great focus on non-tenure tracks as well. We all participated and learned together. Some of this year’s session topics included work-life balance, strengths discovery, advancing equity, human potential, leading with emotional intelligence, goal setting, and career mapping.

All of the sessions were great and so insightful, but the one that spoke to my heart the most this year was career mapping. I had no clue how important it is to have a plan for your career. Imagine if you can avoid sleepless nights, family issues, burnout, and so on if you have a coach to help you with the best path forward. I am so thankful for that session and for the ability to connect with the speaker.

If you are an academic anywhere in the world, or planning to be one, you should check out ALWE. You will not regret it. Sessions happen at times which work for most time zones, so if that is a factor deterring you from registering, do not worry.

Registration will open soon — stay tuned on the ALWE website!
