SWE Magazine and Diverse: a SWE podcast recently won several prestigious awards this year from independent organizations that recognize excellence in publishing and multimedia. The awards signify outstanding accomplishments in writing, research, design, and multimedia publishing.
Concept Communications Inc. announced in July that SWE had won two Grand Awards and five Awards of Excellence in its annual Awards for Publication Excellence, or APEX competition. The Grand Award is the highest honor bestowed by the organization.
SWE Magazine won a Grand Award for writing for the Fall 2023 feature “Tech Stewards Expand the Scope of Responsible Engineering,” by contributing writer Sandra Guy, and Diverse won a Grand Award for Episode 216: “Asian Americans in STEM: Vietnamese Refugee Stories.” The feature focuses on engineers’ efforts to direct the responsible, ethical use of the new technologies they create. The podcast highlights the personal stories of two women in STEM, Hang Loi and Dr. Tracy Nguyen, who escaped Vietnam as children during the fall of Saigon.
SWE Magazine also won five Awards of Excellence:
- The State of Women in Engineering 2023 issue, which includes the magazine’s annual literature review, won in the whole issue category.
- The Spring 2023 article “What’s Past Is Prologue: The Future Is Ours to Write” by SWE archivist Troy Eller English won for history and biography writing.
- The Fall 2023 article “Creating Climate Resistance” by contributing writer Seabright McCabe won in the category of public concerns and trending topics.
- The Winter 2024 issue cover by art director JoAnn Dickey won in the design and illustration of covers category.
- The opening spread of the article, “In Support of Sports” in the Conference 2023 issue, also by Dickey, won for design and illustration of spreads.
In addition, the American Society of Business Publication Editors recognized SWE Magazine with two bronze-level national awards for design. This is the first year the magazine took part in this competition.
The magazine won in the category of design of an opening spread using an illustration for the feature article In Support of Sports, and for design of an opening spread using a typographical treatment for the feature article Maintaining Engineering Ethics. Both appeared in the Conference 2023 issue and were designed by Dickey.
