Affiliate name

Society of Women Engineers (SWE) University of Lagos

Hometown

Lagos

We decided to launch an affiliate because…

SWE Lagos visited our school for an event and introduced possibilities we hadn’t realized existed. We jumped on the opportunity immediately.

Does your affiliate have any signature activities, outreach, or engagement?

Our signature activities include volunteering at SWE Lagos events, industrial visits, and our executive handover ceremonies.

We support the professional affiliate by volunteering and collaborating. Graduate SWE University of Lagos (UNILAG) members easily integrate into SWE Lagos post-graduation. Company visits are rare, so when we do them annually, they stand out. Handover ceremonies celebrate outgoing executives, welcome new ones, and allow students to connect in a relaxed and fun environment with games and laughter.

What are your goals for the affiliate within the next year?

To increase visibility among students by 50%, inspire students to try new things and pursue their passions, and impact their lives in at least one meaningful way.

How are you hoping this affiliate will make an impact on your community?

We hope to connect first-year female students with their seniors for early guidance, equip members with useful skills, and inspire young girls to pursue STEM careers. This fiscal year, we’ve expanded our impact through outreach events, an innovation challenge, digital marketing and graphic design trainings, freshmen orientations, company collaborations, and a financial seminar.

What is one of your favorite memories with the SWE community?

As a team, one of our favorite memories was the November innovation challenge with StrongHer NG|GH by Nokia. Engaging with students new to hackathons and software engineering, celebrating winners, and witnessing their growth and excitement was unforgettable.

Another highlight was our October outreach event at ISL and CMS Girls’ High School, where we bonded with curious, excited students and inspired them alongside our SWE UNILAG members. We also enjoyed collaborating with Women In Science and Engineering (WISE), hosting an event with 1,200 students and over 50 SWE UNILAG volunteers. Managing the volunteers, seeing students’ energy, and reconnecting with students from past outreach events was incredibly rewarding.

Favorite quote to inspire:

“Set your goals high; even falling short brings you farther than standing still.”

“Aim for the stars — even if you miss, you’ll land among the sky.”

What are you looking forward to this year?

We plan to revisit a school we volunteered at last year to revitalize students’ Python skills and love for programming. We’re also excited for another outreach at CMS girls, a nearby school we visited for the first time two months ago and loved.

Is there any advice you would like to share with other affiliates?

The team really matters — these activities feel rewarding and less stressful when you’re part of an active, passionate, and supportive group of executives and volunteers.
