My Experience as a SWE Global Ambassador

Nigeria's Peace Ikpotokin encourages SWE members to apply for the Global Ambassadors Program, saying: "You are able to utilize and apply the SWE leadership competency model and more importantly share your input to support SWE’s mission and vision, and it keeps you open to networking opportunities for personal growth and career success."

SWE Global Ambassador Peace Ikpotokin and friendsThere are a lot of ways that you can be involved in SWE, no matter the stage of your career. You may want to consider the SWE Global Ambassadors Program as an opportunity to contribute to the growth of women in the engineering profession while also supporting SWE’s mission globally.

As a lover of extracurricular activities, I have had quite a number of volunteer experiences with leadership training and was looking for an international opportunity in an organization that consisted of women leaders and also had resources for personal and professional development. I also wanted to leverage the skills I had gained particularly from Obama’s Young African Leadership Initiative, RLC Program, West Africa.

The SWE Global Ambassador Program completely satisfied my interest, particularly as a STEM lover and SDG advocate.

Although I was not so sure of the course the program was going to take, I had basic knowledge about SWE as an undergraduate. Hence, following my role as a previous volunteer, I applied for the FY19 Global Ambassadors Program.

The opportunity to collaborate, lead and learn is a great key for development and I have been privileged to have these great experiences in all. I have also been privileged to be a part of decision-making processes. The continuous learning at every stage of the program is very exciting and that happens to be what I love the most.

I would encourage SWE members to apply for the Global Ambassadors Program as you would be able to utilize and apply the SWE leadership competency model and more importantly share your input to support SWE’s mission and vision. I won’t forget to mention that it keeps you open to networking opportunities which I believe is key for personal growth and career success.

In summary, I suppose this presents as an opportunity for women with an interest in leadership, service and career growth, and also those who are focused on professional growth and networking for personal development.
