What Is the U.S. Space Force (USSF)?
The U.S. Space Force (USSF) is the newest branch of the U.S. Armed Forces, established to protect and manage national interests in space. Operating under the Department of the Air Force, it mirrors the relationship between the Navy and the Marine Corps.
The USSF is led by the Chief of Space Operations, a four-star general with a seat on the Joint Chiefs of Staff, responsible for advising military leadership on space strategy and operations.
Why Does the U.S. Need a Space Force?
Space is essential to national security, economic systems, and daily life. From GPS to communications, space-based systems support everything from military operations to civilian conveniences.
As space becomes more congested and contested by other nations, the U.S. needs to maintain space superiority to ensure reliable access and protect critical infrastructure. The Space Force centralizes space operations under one authority, improving coordination across civil, military, and commercial efforts. This efficiency strengthens the nation’s ability to address emerging threats, consolidate resources, and develop advanced technologies for defense and exploration.
What Is the Mission of the U.S. Space Force?
USSF’s mission is to organize, train, and equip space forces to support U.S. and allied interests. A core concept driving its operations is spacepower — the ability to leverage space capabilities for national objectives across military, diplomatic, and economic domains.
These capabilities include space security, mobility, combat power projection, and space domain awareness, ensuring that the U.S. remains a leader in the evolving space environment.
What Are the Career Opportunities in the Space Force?
For members of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), the USSF offers exciting careers in STEM fields, including satellite operations, systems maintenance, and space systems development. Individuals interested in joining can transfer from Air Force roles or commission through the Air Force Academy, as there is currently no separate Space Force academy.
The Space Force seeks innovative problem-solvers to help shape the future of space operations. Its smaller force size allows for a more focused approach, emphasizing cutting-edge technology and strategic planning in partnership with allies and industry.
Who Are the Guardians?
Members of the Space Force are known as Guardians, a name inspired by the Air Force Space Command’s motto, “Guardians of the High Frontier.” These individuals are responsible for protecting U.S. and allied interests in space, ensuring security, stability, and strategic operations in this critical domain.
The U.S. Space Force plays a pivotal role in ensuring the security and prosperity of the space domain. As the space environment grows more complex, the USSF offers unique opportunities for individuals passionate about engineering, technology, and leadership.
For SWE members, the Space Force represents a chance to contribute to cutting-edge innovations and help secure the future of space exploration and defense. Find out more about career opportunities with the U.S. Space Force on our website.
