Congratulations to our next SWE Advance Power User!

SWE is excited to announce Jennifer Klenka (She/Her) as this quarter’s Advance Power User! We asked Jennifer some questions regarding her dedication to lifelong learning and how she uses the Advance Learning Center to achieve her professional development goals.
Quote from Advance Power User Jennifer Klenka: A growth mindset signifies having a perspective where challenges are seen as opportunities for growth rather than an obstacle. Having the ability to adapt to different situations and environments, especially in a world where technology and methodologies are continuously evolving, is paramount.

How have the courses offered on the Advance Learning Center assisted you with any career transitions or achieving your career goals?

As a software engineer, I value learning all that I can to keep up with the technological advances that are constantly happening around us. There were several trainings in the Advanced Learning Center that help get me up to speed on some of the amazing advancements made in the various fields of engineering. Several of the leadership courses and courses on mentoring really changed my mindset on how those relationships should function. I also really enjoyed the training sessions on outreach and working with students because I’m looking forward to volunteering more as a member of SWE. One of my career goals is to show that I am dedicated as a lifelong learner. The courses that are available in the Advanced Learning Center make it easy for me to continue to meet that goal since there are so many courses available and the list of courses continues to grow.

How do you measure your progress in your learning journey, and how do you set goals for yourself?

I measure my progress in my learning journey by setting clear goals, tracking my achievements, and reflecting on my newfound knowledge and how to apply it to my professional and personal life. When setting goals for myself, I begin by defining objectives that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART). I consider both short-term and long-term goals, breaking them down into manageable steps. Additionally, I prioritize goals based on their significance to my overall learning journey and regularly reassess them to adapt to changing circumstances in my professional and personal life. This approach helps me stay focused, motivated, and accountable in achieving my objectives.

How do you balance your learning with other priorities in your life, such as work or family obligations?

Balancing learning, work, and family involves effective time management and prioritization. I also multitask as much as possible. For example, sometimes I listen to Audible books or seminars while having lunch, getting a workout in, or while commuting. I set realistic learning goals that align with my available time, breaking them into smaller, manageable tasks so they fit into my schedule. I also believe communication is key. I openly discuss my learning goals with my family and employer, ensuring mutual understanding and support. Sometimes I even get my family and co-workers to join in on my learning pursuits, which always adds to the fun of learning something new.

Which courses on the Advance Learning Center did you find most valuable or would recommend?

I really enjoyed the training on Best Practices for Finding and Keeping a Mentor, as this one changed my perspective on mentor/mentee relationships.

I also really enjoyed Tech Talks with Accenture: Meet Me in the Metaverse and Tech Talks: AstraZeneca: What Leaders in Science Can Do. It was amazing to learn about the technological advancements being made in the industry.

I highly recommend Building Rapport: The Lost Art and Science of Effective Workplace Relationships, A Daily Reset: Mindfulness and Stress Reduction, and Reacting to and Thriving Through Change for those looking for more guidance on personal and professional growth.

In your opinion, what are the benefits of being a lifelong learner, and how do you think it can enhance one’s personal and professional growth?

I think there are numerous benefits to being a lifelong learner, but two of my personal favorites are having a growth mindset and adaptability. A growth mindset signifies having a perspective where challenges are seen as opportunities for growth rather than an obstacle. Having the ability to adapt to different situations and environments, especially in a world where technology and methodologies are continuously evolving, is paramount.

I’ve used both benefits in my professional life. I have found myself on a totally new project using technology that I’m not yet familiar with, and I use my growth mindset to see this as an opportunity to learn something new and add to my expertise. I’ve also had to adapt at times where I go into work expecting to have a typical workday but having to unexpectedly pivot because another project requires my expertise for the next few months.
