This event recap was provided by Odegua Florence Ogunbor, FY20 SWE Lagos Global Affiliate Leader.
The SWE Lagos Global Affiliate in Nigeria organized an event titled “Engineering Outreach for Girls” on the 12th of March, 2020 in celebration of International Women’s Day. The event, which took place at the Chemical Engineering Department of the University of Lagos, was aimed at mentoring and empowering young female engineering undergraduates of the institution through career-inspiring topics across various fields of engineering. There were also many discussions around gender bias and on-field experiences that women engineers face.
The program also promoted SWE among girls and unveiled plans to initiate a University of Lagos SWE Global Affiliate at the institution. It commenced with an introduction to SWE delivered by the leader of the SWE Lagos Affiliate, Odegua Florence Ogunbor, during which attendees learned about the benefits of becoming a SWE member. Other members of the group who spoke to the students included Engr. Munik Abu, Engr. Oyemwen Idom and Dr. Olayinka Adewunmu, a Lecturer at the University of Lagos. The event ended with an interactive section where girls asked career-related questions. Girls were excited and 100% of the attendees have shown interest in joining SWE. The group is now making an effort to establish a SWE Global Affiliate at the institution.
