The event was organized by Whirlpool, Puducherry, in collaboration with the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) and Government Higher Secondary School, Thiruvandarkoil, the initiative aimed to inspire young female students to explore careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
A Wake-Up Call: The Need for STEM Awareness
The event began with a plant safety inspection conducted by Mr. Nagarajan, a manager of EHS (environment, health and safety), who ensured that all students and participants were familiar with the necessary safety protocols before entering the manufacturing facility.
Following this, a warm welcome speech was delivered by Mr. Radhakrishnan, Laundry – Asia PDT leader, who set the tone for the day by asking a simple but powerful question:
“How many of you want to become an engineer?”
To everyone’s surprise, not a single hand was raised. That was the moment of realization — this outreach was crucial. The team knew that if they could inspire even one student to pursue STEM, the event would be a success.
A Glimpse Into Whirlpool and SWE’s Mission
Ms. Kalaivani, a materials lab specialist, introduced the students to Whirlpool, providing insights into its history, global presence, and product range. This session helped the students understand the company’s impact and technological advancements.
Mr. Paul, managing director of SWE India, took the stage to introduce SWE. He shared the inspiring story of how SWE was founded, its mission and vision, and its relentless efforts in supporting women at different stages of their careers in STEM fields.
Leadership Connect: Understanding the Science Behind Washing Machines
Students attended a special Leadership Connect session, where Mr. Mahesh, a manager of engineering, shared valuable insights into the functionality of washing machines manufactured at the site. He explained the technology, design, and engineering concepts behind Whirlpool’s products, helping students understand how STEM principles are applied in real-world manufacturing.
This session deepened the students’ appreciation for how everyday appliances are designed and built, reinforcing the importance of innovation, problem-solving, and engineering expertise.
Hands-On Learning: Building a Hydraulic Plane Launcher
One of the most exciting segments of the event was the science activity, where students, under the guidance of Whirlpool engineers, built a hydraulic plane launcher. This interactive session wasn’t just about science — it was a lesson in:
- Hydraulic principles
- Simple machines and mechanics
- Newton’s laws of motion
- Problem-solving and creativity
- Collaboration, patience, and persistence
It was heartwarming to see the students engaged, experimenting, and learning in a fun, hands-on environment.

A Taste of Industry and Real-World Experience
After the activity, everyone took a well-deserved break and enjoyed a delicious South Indian meal at Whirlpool’s canteen. Energized and enthusiastic, the students then participated in the In My Shoes program, where they got to interact with accomplished women engineers.
Two inspiring women engineers, Ms. Surya, a senior engineer – cost, and Mrs. Jackulin Mary, a senior engineer, shared their journeys of overcoming barriers and breaking stereotypes to succeed in the engineering world. Their stories resonated deeply, proving that with determination and passion, anything is possible.
A Walk Through Innovation: Whirlpool Plant Tour
The students experienced a guided tour of Whirlpool’s washing machine manufacturing unit. They witnessed firsthand the processes, operations, and technologies involved in building household appliances. This immersive experience allowed them to see how engineering plays a vital role in everyday life.
A Transformational Moment: A New Perspective on STEM
As the event concluded, Mr. Radhakrishnan delivered a heartfelt thank you, followed by the distribution of certificates and goodies to all the students. Before leaving, the students were asked the same question once again:
“Who wants to become an engineer?”
This time, an astonishing 60% of the hands were raised!
A Step Toward Change
What started as a day of exploration ended as a day of transformation. The event successfully ignited curiosity, inspired dreams, and instilled confidence in these young minds. By bridging the gender gap in STEM and creating opportunities for young women, initiatives like this pave the way for a more inclusive and diverse future in engineering.
This was more than just an event — it was the beginning of a movement to empower the next generation of women engineers.
Special Thanks
A heartfelt thank you to Francisca Marie, analysts engineering, and her team for their incredible efforts in making this event memorable. Their dedication, coordination, and passion played a significant role in ensuring that the students had an enriching and inspiring experience.
