The Society of Women Engineers’ Invent It. Build It. event, held every year as part of the Society’s annual conference, received quite a bit of media attention in New Orleans this year.
The free outreach event is an engineering design exercise aimed at local middle and high school students, encouraging them to participate in fun activities and be engineers for the day.
This year, high school students worked in teams to build a hydraulic clock and middle school students built a balloon-powered car.
Every team was partnered with a SWE member to coach them through the engineering design process, and the experience included additional challenges for teams to attempt with their new creations.
SWE’s Associate Director of Global Programs Emily Burnett spoke with multiple media outlets about how Invent It. Build It. helps develop confidence and problem-solving skills in young students, but also helps nurture a STEM identity from a young age.
