Jonna Gerken, FY18 President of the Society of Women Engineers, talks with Michelle Aikman, Director of Outreach of the Society of Military Spouses in STEM.
Michelle is the Community Engineer for Washington Gas. Leading up to this role, she worked for years an entrepreneur and as an engineer in the energy, forensic, manufacturing, and bioscience industries all while moving around the country with her military family.
Michelle's husband has been in the U.S. Air Force for 16 years, and she is an advocate for military spouse employment. She was named the 2016 Air Force Spouse of the Year by Armed Forces Insurance and Military Spouse magazine. She is a longtime member of the Society of Women Engineers, co-founder of the 501(c)3 nonprofit organization Society of Military Spouses in STEM, and a member of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) President’s Currently Serving Spouse Advisory Council (CSSAC).
A Colorado native, Michelle has a BS in Chemical Engineering with a minor in Public Affairs for Engineers from the Colorado School of Mines, and an MS in Engineering and Technology Management from Washington State University.
