Meet SWE’s Board of Directors: FY19 Special Director, Rainia Washington

headshot of FY19 Special Director Rainia WashingtonRainia Washington is SWE’s Special Director for the 2019 fiscal year. As Special Director, Rainia participates in and actively supports the nominating committee. She also looks at the entire organization and thinks about how to get more diversity in SWE’s nomination process so that there are a variety of demographics and a variety of people who are interested in being leaders.

Rainia Washington received her B.S. in systems engineering from the University of Pennsylvania and an MBA in organizational development from The Pennsylvania State University. She now works as vice president, global diversity and inclusion for Lockheed Martin Corporation. She is responsible for developing and executing global strategies that cultivate and maintain a culture of inclusion for 97,000 employees worldwide. She is responsible for diversity outreach efforts that support the development of diverse talent pipelines, employee engagement and retention, and promoting inclusive leadership behaviors. She leads the company’s Executive Inclusion Council in partnership with the CEO and senior executive leadership. Prior to this role, Washington held a number of human resources-related positions within Lockheed Martin during her 22-year career with the company.

Washington serves on the boards of directors for Great Minds in STEM, the INROADS Mid-Atlantic Regional Office, and the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering. She is actively involved in the community through various organizations: Wiley Tutoring Program, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and the Laytonsville Parent Teacher Association.

I am passionate about identifying opportunities where women can achieve their dreams. I am passionate about leveling the playing field. Because I am in corporate America, I see where some of the disparities are; I see the barriers that are unique only to women, and an organization like the Society of Women Engineers is breaking those barriers. We’re creating the art of possibility. We’re equipping women to be successful in their own right.

– Rainia Washington, SWE Special Director
