SWE’s Chennai Affiliate Collaborates with Dow India
SWE and Dow India’s Women’s Innovation Network aim to empower women to succeed and advance as leaders in engineering and related technical fields.
The SWE Chennai affiliate was formed in August 2016 with an objective to create a driving force that establishes engineering as a highly desirable career for women in the Chennai region. SWE along with Dow India’s Women’s Innovation Network (IWIN) aims to empower women to succeed and advance in those aspirations and be recognized for their contributions and achievements as engineers and leaders in engineering and related technical and scientific fields.
This collaboration started an initiative named Project SITA (Strong, Independent, Tenacious, Ambitious Woman Engineer) to provide an opportunity for female engineering students to do their Engineering Final year project at Dow’s Central Engineering, Chennai office, so that they can experience first-hand a corporate environment wherein core engineering design work is carried out. The partnering colleges were SSN College of Engineering, SRM Institute of Science &Technology, the Madras Institute of technology and AC Tech.
This initiative also included a few events like motivational guest lectures by HR Leader Amitrajit Ghosh and Process Automation Leader Annie John, and an energetic panel talk by DOW’s IWIN members introducing to the young female engineers to the fascinating aspects of design engineering. Currently, 20 undergraduate and 2 post graduate students are doing 8 different projects in disciplines like mechanical, civil, electrical, instrumentation, automation, etc. This initiative started in 2017 December and will go until March 2018.
