The Society of Women Engineers received a grant for $50,000 from the Motorola Solutions Foundation, the charitable arm of Motorola Solutions, Inc. SWE will be using the grant to support its K-12 Outreach programming in 2018, which advances STEM education and inspires and prepares the next generation of future engineers and innovators.
The Motorola Solutions Foundation awards grants each year to organizations, such as SWE, which support and advance public safety programs and technology & engineering education initiatives. This year, programs that served underrepresented populations, including females, people with disabilities and veterans were prioritized.
“Funding from organizations like the Motorola Solutions Foundation allow SWE to fulfill critical components of our mission,” said Karen Horting, executive director and CEO of SWE. “Funding programs that support the encouragement, education and advancement of our future generation of engineers are critical to advancing our overall objective to advocate for and empower women in STEM.”
The grant from Motorola Solutions Foundation will specifically fund four of SWE’s outreach programs:
- SWENext DesignLab, an experience created to encourage girls to choose a career in engineering. Attendees learn about engineering concepts and participate in activities while parents and educators learn about engineering careers, scholarships, college admissions and other resources. SWENext DesignLab was piloted in 2017, and will expand to five additional cities in 2018 – Milwaukee, Wis.; Portland, Ore.; Phoenix, Ariz.; Providence, R.I.; and Tulsa, Okla.
- SWE’s partnership with FRC Robotics Teams and efforts to provide resources and diversity and inclusion training to the 10 teams.
- The SWENext program which provides online and in-person resources, education and toolkits for K-12 girls, their parents and educators in engineering and technology.
- SWENext High School programming at SWE’s annual conference in Austin, Texas October 26-28, 2017.
This year, Motorola Solutions Foundation grants will support programs that help over two million students, teachers, first responders, and community members across the United States. Each participant will receive an average of 186 programming hours from its partner non-profit organizations and institutions. Programs will support special populations including: females, underrepresented minorities, the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, people with disabilities, and veterans.
“Motorola Solutions Foundation is proud to support the work of SWE. As a leading technology company that supports the safety of communities worldwide, we know how important it is to educate tomorrow’s technology professionals as well as enlighten civilians and first responders on today’s safety needs,” said Matt Blakely, executive director of the Motorola Solutions Foundation.
