Oscar winning actor Sean Penn stars in his first major TV role in the new space drama The First. Natascha McElhone stars as a visionary aerospace mogul.
From the creator of House of Cards, Beau Willimon, this original series on Hulu is about a crew of astronauts attempting to land on Mars. The crew faces danger and personal sacrifice as they try to become the first humans on the fourth planet from the Sun.
“It’s a story about the human spirit,” said Willimon. “About our indomitable need to reach for unknown horizons. About people working toward the greatest pioneering achievement in human history. And about the cost of that vision, the danger and sacrifice — emotional, psychological, and physical — that’s required to achieve it. How ordinary, imperfect people band together and overcome a myriad of obstacles to grasp the extraordinary.”
Hulu has released The First Featured Women First Organizations, listing the Society of Women Engineers and other organizations as resources, and it released a preview of the series in the trailer below.
The New York Times notes The First is optimistic about the future, bucking the trend of shows like Westworld and The Handmaid's Tale.
"As befits a show about the future, 'The First' is full of neat gadgetry and believable technology like reliable self-driving cars, augmented reality and Google Glass-ish personal communication hubs. (The only thing that seems far-fetched is the implication that by 2031 listening to voice mail messages will have made a comeback.)"
- Alison Fensterstock, The New York Times
All eight episodes of the series are available now on Hulu.
