FY19 Wow! Innovation Challenge #2

STEM and STEAM outreach are essential programs to guarantee the successful continuation and advancement of science and engineering. Quite a few of such programs entice high school and college students with interactive demos and experiences, though many of these students may have already chosen their desired career paths. For this challenge, we are interested in how your section engages elementary school (K-6) students. Do you host outreach events specifically geared toward K-6? Do you send to section members to elementary schools/classrooms with demos? Does your section sponsor/work with a SWENext club? How do you get them involved?

How to Apply:

Click here to apply and fill out the required information.

The application will require a video, PowerPoint, or Snapguide with your creative approach to the challenge topic. Supporting media such as event photos and/or agendas are recommended, but not required.

Please note the new application form and file submission requirement. All submission files must be provided on an online file sharing service, such as Google Drive or Dropbox. See application for detail.

Recognition:

One section/MAL/affiliate will be awarded a $1,000 Outreach stipend, and featured on SWE social media and the SWE All Together blog. The winning resources will also be posted to the Outreach tab of swe.org for use by others. While individuals, sections and MALs are encouraged to apply, all stipend checks will be made out to a section or MAL organization.

How a Winner is Selected:

Winning applications will clearly communicate an original, creative approach to the Wow! Innovation Challenge. Solutions should be easily replicated by others.

Submission Period:

Submissions must be received by 11:59 PM Central Daylight Time on April 2nd, 2019.

Challenge #3

Collegiate SWE members can have a difficult time juggling classes, jobs/internships and extracurricular commitments while professional members tackle the constant push and pull of work-life balance. This can make it difficult for members to consistently find the time and energy to volunteer for outreach events. Tell us how your SWE section encourages volunteers to come back and avoid “burnout” to maintain outreach volunteer engagement. We are looking for what type of programs or incentives are in place to keep the outreach spark alive, how you foster an exciting and inclusive volunteering environment and how you accommodate volunteers' commitments to other activities to create space for volunteering.
